Berlin Allocates 52 Million Euros to Transform Charlottenburg Infrastructure and Schools
The legislation channels 52 million euros into selected Charlottenburg infrastructure and education upgrades, providing gains for residents near targeted sites while other neighbourhoods receive no new allocations.

The Berlin state legislature passed the Local Development Bill on 3 July, directing specific budget lines to Charlottenburg road repairs, school maintenance and one new childcare facility. The measure applies only to projects listed in the bill's annex, leaving other district requests unfunded for the 2026 financial year.
Why the bill reached final passage now
State budget papers released in May showed a 310 million euro surplus from 2025 transport levies. Lawmakers used that figure to finalise allocations before the summer recess. The legislation states that funds must be spent by 31 December 2026 or returned to the state treasury.
Charlottenburg residents living within 800 metres of the scheduled works will see direct changes. Commuters on the section of Kantstrasse between Wilmersdorfer Strasse and Sophie-Charlotten-Strasse gain new bus lanes and resurfaced carriageway. Parents whose children attend the Grundschule on Suarezstrasse receive an additional 120 childcare places at the planned extension on Pestalozzistrasse. Households outside these zones receive no equivalent new services under the current text.
Budget figures and distribution
The bill lists 27 million euros for road and cycle infrastructure, 18 million euros for school buildings and 7 million euros for the childcare site. These amounts appear in the 2026 supplementary budget table published by the Senate Department for Finance on 4 July. No other Charlottenburg projects appear in the same table.
Implementation begins with tender notices scheduled for August. The Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district office will manage the contracts, with completion deadlines set for the third quarter of 2027. Residents can track progress through the district website, which the legislation requires to be updated monthly once works start.
