Friedrichshain Council Approves €12 Million Infrastructure and Jobs Package

The measure allocates €12 million across three years for road resurfacing, public building maintenance and expanded vocational training at existing district centers. It covers residents who work in trades or rely on buses and trams for travel to jobs in neighboring areas.
Planning for the package started after the district received updated population figures in late 2025 that showed continued growth along the eastern rail corridor. Council records note that existing maintenance backlogs on key routes such as Warschauer Strasse and Boxhagener Platz had reached 18 months of scheduled work by spring 2026.
Effects on residents and services
Residents living near the Ostkreuz station will see new pavement and drainage work begin on two collector streets by September. The same budget line funds replacement of lighting at three community sports fields and adds evening hours at the local job placement office on Frankfurter Allee. Construction crews are expected to draw from the district unemployment register, which listed 2,140 people registered for building-related roles in June.
Policy analysts note that the training component will add 40 new apprenticeship places at the district vocational school. These places focus on electrical and plumbing certifications required for public contracts. Families using the nearby Kindertagesstätte on Stralauer Allee will gain from an extra €1.2 million set aside for roof repairs that the council documents list as overdue since 2023.
Council budget papers state that €4.5 million of the total will support training and placement services projected to serve 350 participants each year. The remaining funds cover materials and contractor payments for 11 separate infrastructure projects listed in the approved schedule.
Implementation begins with publication of tender documents on 15 July. District offices will accept bids until 12 August, after which selected contracts run through the end of 2028. Updates on hiring targets and project timelines will appear in the monthly council bulletin distributed at district libraries.
