Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg Assembly Approves Social Services Enhancement Plan, Expanding Local Support Access

The Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district assembly on 7 July passed the Social Services Enhancement Plan, which raises annual spending on community programs by 1.4 million euros. The measure covers expanded hours at three neighborhood centers and new outreach teams that work with families and seniors living east of the Spree.

Reasons for the July Decision

District records show applications for housing advice and mental-health referrals rose 18 percent between 2024 and 2025. Assembly members reviewed those figures in the June budget session before scheduling the final vote. The plan draws its funding from the 2026 district operating budget already approved by the Berlin Senate.

Under the new rules, the Boxhagener Strasse community center will add evening slots for family counseling three nights a week. The Samariterstrasse youth office will receive two extra part-time positions focused on after-school activities for residents aged 12 to 18. The plan also extends home-visit services for people over 75 who live in the area bounded by Warschauer Strasse and Ostkreuz station.

Direct Changes for Residents

Households that currently wait four weeks for an initial appointment at a district counseling office are projected to receive an appointment within ten days once staffing increases take effect. Local advocates note that the added outreach teams will operate from existing facilities rather than new buildings, keeping administrative costs inside the approved envelope. The legislation states that performance reports must be submitted to the assembly every six months beginning in January 2027.

Implementation is scheduled to begin on 1 August. District staff will advertise the new service hours through flyers at U-Bahn stations and notices posted at the Rathaus Friedrichshain by the end of July. No additional local taxes are required under the current budget allocation.
