Friedrichshain Mayor Expands District Rent Relief Rules and Alters Eligibility for 1,200 Households

The Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg borough mayor announced on 6 July an expansion of the district housing assistance program that widens income thresholds and adds a new category for households with children under 12. The change directly affects tenants in the 10229 and 10245 postcodes who apply for the monthly rent supplement administered through the borough housing office.

Timing of the District Rule Change

The update follows the borough council adoption of the 2026 supplementary budget on 3 July, which added 1.8 million euros to the existing housing aid line. District records show 4,800 applications processed in 2025, with 37 percent rejected solely on the prior income cap. The new thresholds align the local program with revised Berlin state guidelines issued in May.

Residents earning up to 2,150 euros net monthly for a single person or 3,400 euros for a family of three now qualify, up from previous limits of 1,950 and 3,050 euros. The supplement itself remains capped at 280 euros per month for one-bedroom units and 410 euros for two-bedroom units in buildings constructed before 1990.

Local Voices on Implementation

Policy analysts at the Berlin Institute for Urban Research note that the adjustment will require the housing office to reprocess 620 pending files by October. Local advocates note the change removes the previous requirement that applicants demonstrate two consecutive years of residency in Friedrichshain, a rule that had excluded recent movers from eastern districts.

The government projects the expanded program will reach an additional 1,200 households by the end of 2027. Next steps include publication of the revised application form on the borough website by 15 August and two scheduled information sessions at the Ostkreuz community center on 22 and 29 July.
