Friedrichshain Redirects €450,000 From Parks to Street Repairs

The Friedrichshain district mayor announced on 5 July 2026 a change in the annual local services budget that moves 450000 euros from general park maintenance accounts into targeted road resurfacing on Warschauer Strasse, Revaler Strasse and Helsingforser Strasse.

The adjustment follows the release of updated Berlin Senate transport data showing higher daily vehicle counts on those corridors than in 2024. District records list the funds as previously earmarked for tree care and path lighting in Volkspark Friedrichshain and the smaller green spaces near Ostkreuz.

Who receives the new spending and who does not

Residents and businesses along the three named streets gain scheduled resurfacing and drainage upgrades expected to begin in September. Delivery drivers and bus users on those routes stand to see fewer pothole-related delays. Households farther from those streets, including those near Boxhagener Platz and the western edge of the district, lose scheduled park lighting replacements and one round of scheduled tree pruning this year.

Local advocates note that community groups that run weekend markets or youth sports in the affected parks must now apply for separate grants from the remaining 1.1 million euro parks envelope. The legislation states that no new applications will be accepted after 15 August.

The district budget document records that 62000 euros of the shifted sum will cover engineering surveys already contracted for the three streets. The remaining amount covers asphalt and drainage materials listed in the July tender notice published on the district website.

The district office has scheduled a public information session for 22 July at the town hall on Frankfurter Allee. Final contractor selection is projected to occur by 12 August, with work notices posted on the three streets two weeks before crews arrive.
