Mitte 2026 District Budget Raises Youth Service Allocations While Trimming Administrative Posts
Residents with school-age children in areas such as Gesundbrunnen and Wedding gain new after-school places, while some central administrative counters reduce opening hours from September.

The Bezirksamt Mitte approved the district budget for 2026 on 3 July, directing an extra €3.2 million to youth programmes and cutting 14 full-time administrative positions. The changes take effect on 1 September.
The adjustments follow a 4.7 per cent rise in the district population between 2021 and 2025, according to figures published by the Berlin Senate statistics office. Local government officials have cited increased demand for supervised afternoon activities as the main driver for the reallocation.
Families in Wedding and Gesundbrunnen will see 320 additional after-school places created at existing primary schools. Single-parent households receive priority in the first application round, which opens on 15 August. At the same time, residents who rely on in-person processing for building permits or business licences at the Müllerstrasse service centre will encounter shorter counter hours on two weekdays.
Service changes for households
The budget papers list €15.6 million for youth services, up from €12.4 million in the prior year. District staff project that 180 additional children from low-income postcodes will receive places by the end of 2026. Parents outside the priority groups can still apply but may face waiting lists of several months.
Effects on local administration
Business owners and property managers who submit documents at the central office will use an online portal or attend on the remaining three full days. The Bezirksamt states that 92 per cent of current transactions already occur digitally, so the reduced counter service is expected to affect a limited number of cases each week.
Implementation begins with staff training in August. The district publishes monthly occupancy reports for the new after-school slots starting in October, allowing residents to track availability by neighbourhood.
