Prenzlauer Berg District Assembly Approves Local Mobility Funding Allocation, Affecting Resident Commute Options
The approved measures direct resources toward bus and cycling routes in Prenzlauer Berg, with changes to service patterns projected from September 2026 onward.
How we reported this
The Prenzlauer Berg district assembly on 7 July voted to allocate 4.2 million euros from the 2026 district budget to extend protected cycling paths and adjust three bus routes serving the locality. The decision covers segments along Kastanienallee, Schönhauser Allee and adjacent residential streets within the Pankow borough.
Why the vote occurred now
District officials cited updated projections in the Berlin Mobility Act implementation report, which requires boroughs to report progress on cycle network targets by the end of 2026. The assembly combined this requirement with the annual budget adjustment cycle that runs through July each year.
Residents who travel daily between Prenzlauer Berg and central Berlin workplaces will encounter altered bus timetables on lines 12 and 200, plus new separated lanes on two east-west corridors. Households without cars may see shorter waits at stops near Helmholtzplatz and the addition of bike parking at four U-Bahn entrances.
Budget figures and next steps
District budget papers list the 4.2 million euro figure as a 12 percent increase over the 2025 cycling and local transport line item of 37.5 million euros for the entire borough. The funds are drawn from the existing transport envelope and do not require new borrowing.
Construction on the first lane segments is scheduled to begin in September 2026, with route timetable changes published by the Berlin transport authority in August. District staff will hold two public information sessions in August at the Prenzlauer Berg town hall to explain the exact stop locations and diversion routes during works.
Further adjustments to the plan remain possible if the borough assembly reviews performance data in early 2027.
