Berlin Directs New State Funding to Schoneberg Schools, Reduces Class Sizes

The Berlin state legislature passed the Education Equity Bill on 2 July 2026. The measure changes how state education funds reach individual districts and requires local school authorities to report staffing levels each term.

Schoneberg recorded a 9 percent rise in primary school enrolment between 2023 and 2025, according to figures published by the Berlin Senate Department for Education. The new bill ties extra grants to those enrolment counts rather than to fixed district budgets used in prior years.

Changes for households and staff

Parents in Schoneberg whose children attend public schools may see fewer combined classes once the funding formula takes hold. The bill text states that any school reporting more than 24 pupils in a single class becomes eligible for an additional teacher position funded at 48,000 euros per year. Local advocates note that three primary schools in the district already exceed that threshold.

Residents employed by the district administration will handle new reporting requirements. Each school must submit class-size data by 15 October and 15 March under the legislation. The requirement replaces the previous annual summary that was due only in December.

Budget figures and next steps

Budget papers released with the bill show 1.8 million euros earmarked for Schoneberg schools in the 2026-27 financial year. The amount is calculated from current enrolment totals and the new per-pupil weighting system described in section 4 of the act.

The government says the policy will begin on 1 September 2026. District education offices are expected to complete staffing plans by 31 August so that new positions can appear on school timetables when the term starts.
