Why the measure appears in the current budget cycle
Local revenue from commercial property taxes rose by 4 percent in the 2025 fiscal year, according to the same budget paper. That increase allowed the city council to hold household charges steady without drawing on reserves. The decision follows three consecutive years in which those same charges rose by an average of 3.2 percent annually.
Residents who live in the Schöneberg-Nord and Akazienstrasse precincts will notice the unchanged amounts first on their October 2026 statements. A single-person apartment that paid 19 euros per month for waste collection in 2025 will continue to pay 19 euros. A four-person household that paid 34 euros monthly for combined water and waste services will see the same figure appear on the next invoice.
Projected household savings and next steps
The budget paper states that the freeze will keep 1.9 million euros inside Schoneberg households over the 18 months it covers. City analysts calculated the figure by multiplying the number of residential accounts by the average per-household increase that had been planned before the freeze. The same document projects that municipal utility staff will continue normal collection routes without added overtime costs.
City hall will begin printing the revised rate schedules in August 2026. Households that already receive electronic billing will see the unchanged amounts reflected in their online portals by 1 September. Paper bills will carry the same rates starting with the November cycle. The council is scheduled to review the policy again when it prepares the 2028 budget in the second half of 2027.
