Schoneberg Council Adopts 2026 Infrastructure Renewal Program Tied to Local Hiring Requirements

The Schoneberg mayor's office confirmed on 7 July that the city council passed the Infrastructure Renewal Program for 2026-2028, directing capital spending toward street resurfacing, public building maintenance and selected transport links inside the district.

The measure follows adoption of the annual budget in late June and responds to documented wear on local assets listed in the council's asset management register. National economic conditions have increased pressure on municipal revenues, prompting the council to tie infrastructure outlays more directly to employment outcomes inside Schoneberg.

Residents who use the U-Bahn stations at Bayerischer Platz and Nollendorfplatz will see scheduled platform and access upgrades beginning in the fourth quarter. The same projects require prime contractors to advertise positions first through the district job centre and to meet a minimum local labour target set out in the program guidelines.

Services and employment pathways for residents

Maintenance crews will also address drainage and lighting faults along Hauptstrasse and Motzstrasse, locations identified in the 2025 condition audit as requiring attention within two years. Local tradespeople and recent training-program graduates can apply for these roles without competing against out-of-district bidders on the initial shortlist.

The 2026 capital works allocation earmarked for these Schoneberg projects totals 14.2 million euros according to the published budget papers. Council officers estimate the works will sustain roughly 180 full-time equivalent positions over the three-year period, with the local-hire clause applying to at least one-quarter of those positions.

Next steps in implementation

Tender documents for the first package of road and lighting contracts are scheduled for release by the end of July. The procurement office will publish quarterly compliance reports tracking the share of wages paid to workers living in Schoneberg postcodes. Any shortfall below the target percentage will trigger a review clause already written into the program ordinance.
