Schoneberg Candidate Spotlight Ordinance Expands Public Access to District Election Details

The Schoneberg district council approved the Candidate Spotlight Ordinance on 2 July, requiring every candidate in the September district elections to provide financial disclosure forms and policy statements to the local election office within 14 days of nomination.

Why the change takes hold now

District officials scheduled the ordinance rollout ahead of the 14 September vote to meet a Berlin state requirement that all 12 districts standardize candidate information distribution before the next full council term begins in January 2027. The measure applies to the 48 seats on the Schoneberg council and covers candidates from every registered party or independent list.

Residents who rely on district services such as the Kleistpark after-school programs or the Nollendorfplatz U-Bahn station upgrades will see candidate positions on those specific items listed in uniform one-page summaries available at the Schoneberg town hall and on the district portal. The ordinance also schedules two evening forums at the Rathaus Schöneberg, one on 20 August and one on 27 August, with recordings posted online within 48 hours.

Budget allocation and next steps

The district budget line approved last month sets aside 120,000 euros to cover forum production, translation into Turkish and Arabic, and printing of 25,000 paper copies for distribution at libraries and senior centers. Local advocates note that the same amount covered similar materials during the 2021 district vote.

From 1 August onward, any resident can request the full candidate packet by email or in person at the election office on Hauptstrasse 17. The government projects that the first set of profiles will be posted online on 8 August, with updates added as nominations close on 31 July. Voting registration deadlines remain unchanged at 31 August.
