Wedding City Council Approves 2026 Infrastructure and Jobs Package Targeting Transit and Community Facilities

Wedding City Council members voted 7-2 on July 7 to pass the 2026 Infrastructure and Jobs Package. The measure directs 85 million dollars toward road resurfacing, new transit stops, and two community service buildings in the North and East districts.

The package responds to a March 2026 city planning report that identified 12 kilometres of deteriorated arterial roads and gaps in evening transit service across Wedding. Council staff presented the plan after reviewing bids from three local contractors and two regional engineering firms.

Effects on employment and daily services

Under the package, 850 short-term construction positions are projected to open by September 2026, according to the council's procurement office. Local advocates note that priority hiring language directs 60 percent of those roles to residents living within Wedding postal codes. Expanded bus routes will add 14 new stops and extend service until midnight on three lines that currently end at 9 p.m.

Residents in the East district will gain a new community centre with job-training classrooms and a child-care annex. North district households will see pavement replacement on the main commercial corridor that carries 22,000 vehicles each weekday. The legislation states that project contracts must include local subcontracting requirements for at least 40 percent of total value.

City budget documents released with the vote show the 85 million dollars will be drawn from existing capital reserves and a 12 million dollar state matching grant approved in April. No new property-tax increase is included in the financing plan.

Procurement staff said contract awards are scheduled for review at the August 4 council meeting. Construction on the first road segment is listed to begin within 60 days of final signatures.
