Charlottenburg Invests Millions in Green Chemistry Labs and Infrastructure

The Chemical Invention Factory
At the center of this sector is the construction of the 'John Warner Center for Start-ups in Green Chemistry' at the Technische Universität Berlin. As a major infrastructure project on Campus Charlottenburg, this facility is designed to support pre-start-ups working in green chemistry, providing specialized laboratory space for innovation. The center is a significant investment in the region, with funding totaling €21 million. This project is intended to function as the largest laboratory infrastructure for this specific field in Europe, fostering advancements in sustainable products, including fertilizers and medical applications. According to project records, construction of the 1,000-square-meter complex commenced in 2025, and research teams were scheduled to occupy the space by the first half of 2025.
Sustainable Commercial and Urban Development
Beyond specialized laboratories, the commercial sector in Charlottenburg is also implementing large-scale renewable energy solutions. GSG Berlin, part of the CPI Property Group, currently manages an extensive solar energy network across the neighborhood. With a capacity of 5.75 MWp installed across 26 commercial properties, the initiative has contributed to environmental targets, saving approximately 2,000 tons of CO2 annually since 2014. These installations demonstrate the integration of energy-saving technology into established business infrastructure.
Simultaneously, the 'ClimateHOOD' living lab project on Campus Charlottenburg is working to address urban climate challenges. The project utilizes sponge city principles, which include the installation of rainwater cisterns and the implementation of green facades and vertical farms. These features are designed to facilitate the cooling of the local urban environment and provide areas for food production, with project goals reaching completion milestones by 2026. This trend toward green architecture is also supported by local enterprises such as BerlinGreen.tech UG. This company focuses on developing integrated solutions that combine vertical plant cultivation and hydroponics with smart-home Internet of Things (IoT) systems, signaling a broader business commitment to high-tech, sustainable living environments.
