Charlottenburg Opens New Protected Cycling Routes for Families, Beginners
New marked paths in district parks give parents and new riders protected space away from busy traffic.

Charlottenburg opened two new family cycling loops this month inside Schlossgarten Charlottenburg and along the western edge of Volkspark Jungfernheide.
City data show that one in three Berlin households with children under twelve now owns at least one bicycle, yet many parents still cite traffic as the main barrier to regular rides. The new routes respond to that demand by using existing park paths that were widened and signed last winter.
Routes through two local parks
The 2.8-kilometre loop inside Schlossgarten Charlottenburg starts at the south gate on Spandauer Damm and circles the palace grounds on flat gravel and paved sections separated from pedestrian areas by low wooden barriers. The route connects directly to the quieter section of Kantstraße for riders who want a short on-street extension to the Lietzensee promenade. In Volkspark Jungfernheide the 4-kilometre beginner circuit runs from the main entrance on Jungfernheideweg past the playground and ends at the fenced dog area, avoiding the steeper northern slope entirely.
Both parks belong to the district’s official outdoor fitness network, which also lists free bicycle repair stands installed in 2025 at the Schlossgarten south gate and near the Jungfernheide pond. The network is run by the borough’s sports department in partnership with the local ADFC chapter.
Numbers and next steps
A 2025 mobility survey by the Berlin Senate counted 18,400 daily bicycle trips inside Charlottenburg parks, up 12 percent from 2023. Rental bikes from the city’s nextbike system cost 2 euros for the first 30 minutes and are available at six stations within 400 metres of the new loops. District staff will host free guided family rides every Saturday morning in July and August, starting at 10 a.m. from the Schlossgarten south gate.
