Friedrichshain's Free Outdoor Gyms Draw Crowds This Summer
No-cost stations draw steady crowds to Volkspark and riverside paths as summer routines shift outdoors.
How we reported this

Friedrichshain residents have turned to the pull-up bars and dip stations inside Volkspark Friedrichshain as daily training spots this July.
Interest in these sites has grown since the district opened extended park hours last month, giving locals more daylight access before evening commutes along Warschauer Straße. The shift reflects wider Berlin patterns where free equipment replaces paid gym memberships for many workers on fixed schedules.
Two main circuits stand out
The first circuit sits at the eastern edge of Volkspark Friedrichshain near the Märchenbrunnen fountain, where eight stations include parallel bars, a climbing rope and leg-raise frames installed in 2022. A second route runs along the Spree path in the Stralauer Kiez between the East Side Gallery and the Modersohnbrücke, featuring chest-press levers and balance beams spaced every 200 metres. Both areas stay open without fees or reservations, unlike the indoor options at the nearby Sportpark Friedrichshain on Jessenstraße.
Berlin’s 2025 park-usage report recorded a 22 percent rise in visits to these outdoor fitness zones compared with 2023 figures, with the largest gains among adults aged 25 to 44. Equipment at both Friedrichshain sites receives monthly safety checks from the district’s green-spaces team, last completed on 28 June.
Getting started this week
Visitors can reach the Volkspark stations via the U5 stop at Frankfurter Tor or the S-Bahn at Warschauer Straße for the riverside route. Sessions typically last 30 to 45 minutes, and locals advise bringing a towel and water bottle since no on-site changing rooms exist. Those new to the equipment can follow the simple circuit diagrams posted at each station or join the informal Wednesday evening group that meets at 18:30 near the Märchenbrunnen.
