Kreuzberg Parks Install Dedicated Cycling Routes for Families, Beginners

Kreuzberg launched two new family cycling loops on July 1 that run through Görlitzer Park and along the Maybachufer canal path, giving beginners and parents with children under 12 a traffic-free option for the first time.

The routes address rising demand for outdoor exercise among local families who have shifted away from indoor gyms since the city expanded its wellness programs last year. Kreuzberg residents logged more than 180,000 hours of park-based activity in the first half of 2026, according to district health records, as summer weather draws more people outside.

Routes through Görlitzer Park and Volkspark am Weinberg

The 3.2-kilometre Görlitzer Park loop starts at the eastern entrance near Schlesisches Tor U-Bahn station and circles the main lawn before linking to the canal towpath. A second 2.8-kilometre route begins at the Volkspark am Weinberg playground on Bergstraße and follows flat gravel tracks that avoid steep inclines. Both paths carry blue family symbols and speed limits of 15 kilometres per hour.

The Kreuzberg Cycling Collective, a neighbourhood group that meets every Tuesday at 18:00 in Görlitzer Park, helped mark the routes with the district office. The collective also runs a free helmet-lending station at the park café that opened in April 2026.

Registration numbers and rental costs

City data released on July 3 shows 1,240 family memberships purchased for the new routes in the first week, each costing 12 euros for a three-month pass that includes access to two public bike repair stands. Single-day rentals at the Schlesisches Tor docking station run 9 euros for an adult bike and 6 euros for a child trailer.

Parents can join the next guided beginner session on July 12 at 10:00, meeting at the Maybachufer entrance to the canal path. The two-hour ride covers both loops and ends with a stop at the park kiosk for water refills.
