Hidden Nature Walks Locals Love But Tourists Miss in Mitte
Mitte residents use quiet riverside paths and pocket parks for daily movement away from crowded tourist routes.
How we reported this

Berlin-Mitte residents have shifted their summer fitness routines to three lesser-known riverside paths and two pocket parks that see almost no international visitors on weekday mornings.
The change comes as daylight stretches past 9 p.m. in July 2026 and local wellness groups report rising demand for low-cost outdoor sessions. City health data from the previous year showed a 31 percent increase in registered outdoor activity permits for Mitte green spaces between May and September.
Riverside routes off the main paths
One favoured stretch begins at the foot of the Monbijoubrücke and follows the northern Spree bank east for 1.8 kilometres behind the Bode Museum construction fence. Locals call the route the “back Spree” because it stays hidden from the Museum Island crowds. Another option starts at the Gartenstraße entrance to Park am Nordbahnhof and continues along the disused railway cutting to the Invalidenfriedhof gate, a 2.4-kilometre loop that passes only one café.
Both routes connect to the weekly Mitte Walk & Talk sessions run by the neighbourhood initiative Grün Mitte e.V. The group meets every Tuesday at 7:15 a.m. at the Nordbahnhof S-Bahn exit and charges no fee beyond a voluntary 3-euro donation for printed maps.
Combining movement with daily life
Many residents integrate these walks into commutes or lunch breaks. A 2025 Senate survey counted 2,400 regular users on the back Spree path during the work week, compared with 18,000 on the tourist-facing side of the river. The same data listed average visit length at 47 minutes.
Access remains straightforward. From Oranienburger Tor U-Bahn station, the Monbijoubrücke path lies four minutes north on foot. The Park am Nordbahnhof loop begins directly behind the station building on Gartenstraße. Maps are available at the Grün Mitte office on Auguststraße 78 or can be downloaded from the group’s site before heading out.
Those new to the routes are advised to start early, carry water, and note that the paths have no public toilets between the two parks. Local medical professionals recommend checking with a Mitte Hausarzt before beginning any new exercise plan.
