Cycling Routes Safe for Families and Beginners Wind Through Neukölln Parks

Neukölln district crews finished painting dedicated family cycling lanes on 9 July 2026 inside Volkspark Hasenheide and along the Maybachufer section of the Neuköllnische Schifffahrtskanal.

The work responds to rising demand for outdoor exercise close to home after indoor gyms reported capacity limits during the past two winters. Parents in the neighbourhood have asked for routes that keep children away from the fast lanes on Sonnenallee and Karl-Marx-Straße.

Two local loops already in use

One 4.2-kilometre circuit starts at the Hasenheide playground entrance on Columbiadamm and stays inside the park’s outer ring before returning via the small hill near the open-air cinema. The second route follows the canal towpath from Maybachufer at Lohmühlenstraße for 3.8 kilometres to the bridge at Wildenbruchstraße, where riders can turn onto the quiet streets of the Rixdorf neighbourhood. Both loops connect to the existing bike station run by the local ADFC group at the south end of the park.

City data released last month showed a 31 percent rise in family cycling permits issued in Neukölln between January and May 2026 compared with the same period in 2025. Hourly rentals at the Hasenheide station cost 6 euros for an adult bike and 4 euros for a child seat model, with helmets included at no extra charge.

Practical steps for first rides

Riders can pick up free paper maps at the Neukölln district office on Karl-Marx-Straße or download the marked routes onto any phone before leaving home. Sessions run every Saturday morning at 10 a.m. through the end of August, starting from the same Hasenheide entrance. New riders are advised to begin on the flat canal path before attempting the gentle slope inside the park. District staff recommend checking the daily weather app for wind on the open canal section and carrying water for children under ten. The lanes stay open until dusk each day.
